Gutters Matter More Than You Think

When was the last time you looked at the state of your gutters? Outside of keeping them clean of leaves and debris, you likely don’t want to spend much on a gutter replacement until they’re literally falling off your home.

The truth is, gutters play a far more critical role in protecting your home than most realize. And if they aren’t doing their job properly, the consequences can be frustrating at best, expensive at worst.

This photo shows the reality so many homeowners live with every day. See those beautiful leaves filling up the gutters of this home? The colors are pretty, but the clogged gutters? Not so much.

Clogged gutters aren’t just unsightly. They can lead to some pretty severe problems that will cost you much more than a seasonal gutter cleaning.

Quality Gutters Protect Your Home’s Foundation

When thinking about clogged gutter damage, you might think of roof issues or siding problems. But all that water that can’t be directed down and away from your home has to go somewhere – and gravity is powerful.

As water overflows clogged gutters, it pools down at the base of your home. Over time, this creates serious structural problems that can cost thousands of dollars to repair.

Your foundation holds up your entire home. When water saturates the soil around your foundation, you risk cracks and settling. Properly functioning gutters channel rainwater and snowmelt away from your home, removing the risks of flooding and long-term damage.

Clogged Gutters Can Risk Water Damage

It’s not just your foundation that is at risk. Clogged gutters can force water to divert from its natural flow, and water is very creative at creating trouble. Water can pool up in gutters and seep behind siding and soak into fascia boards.

At worst, the water can rot your home’s wood and peel your paint. The even bigger risk? Mold can grow within the walls. That’s one aspect I’m always concerned about, because mold doesn’t just hurt your home–it hurts everyone in your home.

It’s amazing to think of how gutter maintenance or replacement can enhance your health and well-being. Isn’t that worth the investment?

Gutters Can Protect Your Landscaping

If you’re like many homeowners, you’ve probably invested time and money in your property’s landscaping. But overflowing gutters can erode the soil and wash away mulch. Nobody wants to see their flowerbeds and gardens washed away because their gutters led to an unexpected flood.

Functional gutters preserve your landscaping and your home, which helps boost your property value (and how much you enjoy your home!)

How To Keep Your Gutters Working Year-Round

The good news is that most gutter problems are preventable. You just need some basic routines and maintenance to keep them thriving in each season:

● Clean your gutters twice a year: Keeping your gutters cleared out twice a year at a minimum (usually in the spring and fall) can keep you in great shape year-round.

● Consider more cleaning if you have trees: if your home is surrounded by tall trees, you may need to clean more often to keep your gutters clear of debris.

● Think about a gutter guard: Modern gutter guard systems can help reduce maintenance. They keep debris out of your gutters while allowing water to flow smoothly.

● Watch for ice dams: If you live in a climate with particularly cold winters, watch for ice dams. If your gutters are clogged, the water may pool and freeze, which can force water up and into your shingles.

When in doubt, schedule two cleanings a year by gutter professionals. And if you find that your gutters still can’t keep up, it may be time to consider investing in a brand new set of gutters. You may not want to spend the money now, but imagine the costs that gutter-related damage can lead to later!

Gutter Health Protects Your Home’s Health

Upgrading to quality gutters and maintaining them properly can be one of your best investments this year. Your home works as an integrated system, and your gutters play a key role in protecting your foundation, your yard, and much more.

If your gutters fail, the problems will multiply fast. But working as they are designed? And looking great? You’ll have such peace of mind knowing that you don’t have to think about them (even when the storms come!)

Consider upgrading your gutters or implementing a gutter maintenance system today. Your home (and your wallet) will thank you!
