Patio door frames come in three main materials. Vinyl is the most affordable and provides good energy efficiency because vinyl does not conduct heat the way metal does. It is also low maintenance and never needs painting. Solid aluminum doors are strong and allow for thinner frames with more glass area, but aluminum conducts heat and cold, making them less energy efficient unless they have a thermal break built into the frame. Wood-clad doors have a wood interior for the look of natural wood on the inside of the home and an aluminum or vinyl exterior for durability and low maintenance on the outside. Tempered Glass and Why It Is Required in Patio Doors
All patio doors use tempered glass. This is not an upgrade. It is a requirement by building code for any glass in or near a door because of the risk of someone walking into the glass or the door slamming and shattering the pane. Tempered glass is heat-treated during manufacturing to make it several times stronger than standard annealed glass. More importantly for safety, when tempered glass does break, it shatters into small rounded pebbles rather than sharp shards.
